MEET OMI AND OPI

Picture
Meet the owners of Omi's Blackberry Farm! Omi and Opi both grew up just a few miles from the farm but they haven't always been farmers. Omi worked for an insurance company for 43 years and Opi was a land surveyor before he decided to become an elementary school teacher. After retirement, they both wanted to work the land and the blackberry farm was born.

Omi's favorite thing about the farm is watching the joy and excitement in the kids as they run through the patch picking berries. Opi likes the fact that there's always something to do on a farm so he's never bored, and he always has new victims for his "Dad jokes". Both of them take pleasure in meeting the people that come out to visit and enjoy seeing their visitors leave with smiles on their faces.

MEET THE FARM

Omi's Blackberry Farm has 3 acres of blackberries for you to pick. This farm has been in Omi's family for over 70 years. Before it was a blackberry farm it was used to grow crops like corn and cotton and eventually became a cattle ranch. When the farm passed to Omi, she and Opi decided to try something different. They wanted to grow berries. First they started with aronia berries, but when those didn't flourish, Omi and Opi switched to blackberries. They tried out 9 different varieties to see which would work best in the soil, took the best producers, and began building the farm you see today. But if you're feeling nostalgic, you can still pick berries in the "Original 54" where it all began.

MEET THE BERRIES

We have four different varieties of berries on the farm. Mother Nature decides how quickly our berries ripen, but usually our season runs from the end of April to the end of June. Freedom and Bryson berries are ready to pick around the end of April. Kiowa berries come next towards the end of May and carry through June. Von berries are the late starters and are ready to pick in mid-June. This is great news for berry pickers because it means you can visit the farm for a full two months of berry picking fun!
